Latest System Changes

Upcoming Lenovo S10-3Ts includes N475 1.83Ghz Atom processors (check the latest spec sheet PDF)

S10-3Ts with N455 or processors support DDR3 RAM (204 pin sodimm) Usually the N455 systems ship with only 1GB RAM. If you plan on upgrading RAM you must get a 2GB PC3-10600 DDR3 sodimm card. This explains why some people are saying that their system uses 204 pin.

Oldish systems came with N450 and N470 which use PC2-5300 DDR2 200 pin memory. The S10-3T that I had was a N450 system which used 200 pin DDR2.

I don't own an S10-3T anymore, therefore I cannot create original content for this blog. It's time to end it. The blog will stay up for at least a few years which should help a lot of future S10-3T owners. I will be moving to the Lenovo X201 tablet which I have borrowed a unit from Lenovo. I wouldn't have been loaned a X201 without spending months on this S10-3T blog.

I posted the video before but it wasn't uploaded by Lenovo. This one has been uploaded by Lenovo and it's on the LenovoVision Youtube channel. They have been uploading new advertising videos lately with the focus on the S series netbooks and some modders videos.

I'm not sure about the requirements for their mod contest, but the S10-3T can have a lot of mods. I think the Subaru mod was pretty good.

oStylus - See what you are drawing

There are lots of people looking for a more precise stylus for the S10-3T, especially for note taking. I have checked the Dagi stylus before and that is ok, but maybe this oStylus is a better solution.

The video shows an iPad, which is similar to the S10-3T's capacitive screen. What do you guys think? If anyone tries it please let us know what your experience is.

Modify Hardware Buttons to Launch Programs

I have been asked many times how to modify the side buttons. My guess is that I never titled the post correctly, so hopefully this fixes it.

This program was made by Stephen Perrin and it modifies several things which include rotation settings and the hardware buttons.

Make sure to restart your system!

This is third party software, if something goes wrong then reinstall the rotation drivers and your system will go back to the original rotation program. This is one of the most useful programs that you "must" install on your S10-3T. Thanks to Stephen Perrin for sharing!

Details:
You can change what is launched when the top or middle button is pressed
Change what rotation mode the system goes when in slate mode
Change what rotation modes the system goes when rotation button is pressed (4, 3, 2 states)
You cannot have auto rotation and the rotation button at the same time
Some fresh installs of Windows (pirated ones) do not have auto rotation with Stephen's program (missing DLLs)

Intel releases AppUP the App Store for Tablets

It's nice to be able to find programs in one place, say hi to the new App Store from Intel.

That's a WeTab but the S10-3T can convert to a slate tablet so many of the programs should work with the S10-3T, or just keep it in netbook mode so you can easily type and touch the screen when needed. If they had an app store the moment Windows tablets were released the consumer interest would have picked up, the iPad wouldn't look so special. For now I suspect a lot of apps are not worth bothering with... but maybe there's a few that are fun, productive, or something worth getting. Dang it... where's my S10-3T when I need it? ;)

Oh, the website and AppUp are formatted for 1024 x 600 resolution, who knows if portrait mode will work.

Looks good and the video shows a nice smooth interface.

Laptop Magazine just ran an article about Meego powering the instant OS Splashtop. It shows a lot of potential!

A little from the Laptop Mag article:

DeviceVM, the company behind the popular Splashtop instant-on OS, announced today that it is embracing the MeeGo operating system in a huge way. The company has ported its programs over to Meego and will be offering OEMs the new, MeeGo-powered Splashtop to put on their systems. In addition, many existing Splashtop users will be able to upgrade their Splashtops to the MeeGo version via an online download in the first half of 2011.

The move to MeeGo will allow the Splashtop instant-on environment, which has up-until-now consisted of only a handful of native applications
, to install any app from Intel’s AppUp store. So rather than being just a simple instant-on environment with Web, e-mail, and Skype, and a perhaps a photo manager (depending on what version of Splashtop your computer comes with), the new MeeGo Splashtop will be a fully functional netbook OS.

A little time to relax. Watch the clip at 420p and it will sound better.

Now what role did the S10-3T play in here? The S10-3T was used to process the sounds from the Venus guitar and then output to the speakers. Uli Dumschat is a Product Marketing Engineer for Intel Software Development Products for the Atom Processors. This is a way better advertisement than the "Twice as Cool" picture and "Weird Blond Dog and Girl Combo". Now what programs is he using on the video? who knows but the sound came out pretty darn good. Kudos!

Google Reader with S10-3T Touch Screen

A lot of websites are badly formatted to fit small screens which brings a neat solution via RSS feeds. Google Reader grabs RSS feeds and makes the content fit in the screen. If you are a fan of certain blogs and you want to view lots of the latest posts you can easily view them with Google Reader.

The video was recorded over a week ago... I have a few more posts to do so this won't be the last one. It probably will be the last one with a video of my S10-3T. :(

Like I have said the S10-3T is not your normal netbook that is usually very limited, there are so many more things that you can do thanks to the touch screen, and to the expandability options (3G, TV Tuner, PCI-E stuff, USB, and other or just testing stuff) I hope Microsoft gets some easier to use tools to create touch screen experiences with tablets.

Aaron's TV Antenna Mod for S10-3T

When I added a TV Tuner to my S10-3T the signal wasn't the strongest, I had to get out of the house to get good signal. The embedded antennas in the S10-3T aren't as good as an external one. For some reason the port is blocked and we don't have an easy access. So... we have to do it ourselves!

I knew Stephen did a mod and got better reception a while ago with some crazy ancient ritual magic of his. I didn't do it because I was selling my S10-3T (my lame excuse). Now we have another brave fellow by the name of Aaron who has added an external antenna and has shared comments and images. Enjoy!

Received Aver Media A316 Mini PCI-e Hybrid TV Tuner card today and able to install without any problems, used driver found by Jesse here and it went smoothly in installation. I also got a heap of antennas (sort of foil types) (2 no) and more antenna connecting wires with it too. So now I have Analog, DVB-T and FM Radio. I missed screws to mount the card and managed to find only one screw instead of required two. Will this be an issue?

Haven't tested TV reception yet being indoors, but FM worked well with Power Cinema 6. Now wanting to unplug/unblock that TV antenna hole and connect external antenna if some guide exists. Searched but so far not anything well documented or reliable on how to unblock that TV antenna port and plug in external antennas.

Jesse, I watched your Crystal HD dismanteling video very keenly to get any clue (almost frame by frame!) about that TV Antenna Port before I will be able to gather enough courage to dismantle my S10-3t. Just in case if you, did you find any possibilities to that TV Antenna Port thing / part while you dismantled it for Crystal HD?

I plan to dismatle it anyway and make half-PCIe slot to be available as full PCIe as well as unblock TV Antenna Port and find out if I can put in an internal BT module as well, so then I will have take care of hardware modifications part and then I will have to do software ones only in future if and when I decide to add Crystal HD or something.

BTW, any chance I get to know details about how Stephen Perrin did it? Any web links are greatly appreciated of available.

OK, opened my S10-3t, removed that rubber plug from TV Port and now I can say it even can be very very carefully pierced too! To connect external antenna, have ordered UFL adapter. May be open it one more time when I get it. It is very scary in the beginning, requires a lot of patience! But I appreciate this S10-3t, very sturdy.

Finally added TV antenna to antenna port. I needed to mind hand drilling and a bit plastic melting but USL-SMA antenna connector fitted in perfectly. I was able to watch and record all available HD, Encrypted HD, SD, and DAB channels perfectly. AverMedia A316 showed true performance with antenna add-on. Second dismanteling of S10-3t was piece of cake and it feels very easy to open and re-asemble the way Lenovo made it, very thoughtful and user friendly once you get used to it.

One thing you should really see is how much time elapsed between the comment posts. Mods can take a bit of time so be patient if you ever decide to do this. New Broadcom Crystal HD Cards BCM70015

One thing that the S10-3T can be improved upon is the Flash playback. It's the only thing that makes Firefox shoot up in CPU and RAM usage like no other. The previous Crystal HD that I installed on my system wasn't that good, maybe the new BCM70015 is.

The new card comes works with the mini PCI-E slot, but I guess you could remove it from that container and have the half mini size. Now if we didn't have to hack the bios to get this card working that would be super! I would give it a shot, but my S10-3T is going pretty soon.

I'm not sure how this one escaped my master search abilities. Here's a neat demonstration of Hildon Desktop which is a window manager and application launcher program.

I have been asked several times about a good comic book reader, and well I don't read comics so I wouldn't know. But sixtiesvision has a neat demonstration with the Barnes and Nobles program and CDisplay which is a comic book reader. Check it out!

From all of the digital book readers right now I think the Barnes and Nobles one has the edge when it comes to touch compatibility. The comics look really good on the system too. Thanks to sixtiesvision for the the video and the suggestions.

Attack of the Show - S10-3T Review

[This post was written a long time ago, but I never posted it!]

I do not like reviews from shows like Attack of the Show. They are an entertainment company and so they entertain. :-)

"They should have software that integrates with the idea of touch screen technology" - I like that quote. I'm sure Mac OSX is 100% multi-touch. (yep they are Mac fans). The iPad offers iOS which is "Mickey Mouse" software and not a full operating system.

One note:
With my Acer Aspire One I always felt like I was limited. Mainly the need for a mouse to do a lot of things because touchpads suck (even Macbook ones) If you have a bigger screen you need to slide your fingers quite a bit, the touch screen changes that. With the touch screen I just touch the screen and I'm there.

One advantage of the S10-3T is that it converts to a tablet if needed. I can see massive potential for repetitive tasks, which I do quite a bit. The portrait mode when using Flicks is awesome. There is no need for back and forward buttons anymore.

Things that help improve your experience:
Optimize your system (fresh install win7, upgrade ram, energy management)
Change the DPI if needed (makes things easier to touch)
Hibernate your system, not shutdown
Change Resolution so you can see more
Install Stephen Perrin's rotation program.

I'm not a fan of the Linux Action Show, but they did show the S10-3T! It's quite a bit of time and they have great comments about the S10-3T.

Broadcom Wifi Drivers for Windows 7

I recently reformatted my S10-3T to prep it to get it shipped. One problem I ran into was the wireless driver. I know my wifi is a Bradcom card and I'm running Windows 7. The problem is that Lenovo offers a Windows XP one and not the Windows 7 one at S10-3T drivers page. Also, the "Wireless LAN" driver they offer is a Intel ProSet WiMax Driver so it's not the correct Wifi driver.

After downloading and testing all of the drivers that Lenovo had listed and since none worked I came to the conclusion that it's a bad listing from Lenovo. I do remember when I made a mistake and had all the drivers of the "S10-3" listed on this site, those drivers worked. So I downloaded the S10-3 wifi drivers and I'm up online now!

I have also been asked about this before but Lenovo hasn't released an official list of compatible PCI-E and PCI-E/USB Interface cards it makes it super hard to find information. I hope this list is the real one.

I think it's better than Lenovo Philippine's weird dog and girl combo. I'm not sure how much they spend on these photoshoots but my guess is that they could have used the money in a better way. That's just a guess of course. ;-)

I have been working on the S10-3T for many months, but I find it super impressive that companies are still making videos presenting the S10-3T. It seems that the average internet buzz lifespan of netbooks is super short, the S10-3T has maintained its buzz quite a bit. Enjoy!

I heard Best Buy and Microsoft will really focus on tablets this fall and I'm sure the S10-3T will be in there. That should bring in quite a few people to this website looking for lots of tips on how to improve their S10-3Ts. :-)
