New Broadcom Crystal HD Cards BCM70015

One thing that the S10-3T can be improved upon is the Flash playback. It's the only thing that makes Firefox shoot up in CPU and RAM usage like no other.  The previous Crystal HD that I installed on my system wasn't that good, maybe the new BCM70015 is.

Single-Chip High Definition Advanced Media Processor

The BCM70015 single-chip Crystal HD advanced media processor is a low cost, low power, highly integrated solution for high definition (HD) video playback applications. It is targeted for PC/x86 applications such as playback of streaming video content, Blu-ray Disc™ playback, file-based content, and broadcast and other TV sources. It is optimized for use in netbooks, notebooks, and Small Form Factor (SFF) and slim desktops.

Crystal HD solutions leverage Broadcom's proven set-top box (STB) and consumer media player technologies to provide one of the industry's best HD media playback experiences on low cost netbooks. With support integrated within Adobe® Flash® Media Player, the vast library of online HD content from popular websites is now available for enjoyment on netbooks at a low cost and without sacrificing the benefits of portability and long battery life.

Features
* Provides software support for Adobe Flash Player (v10.1), Windows Media® Player (v12), as well as support for other third-party media players including both commercial and open-source

* Supports standard definition (SD) and HD multi-format video decode of industry standard codecs (H.264/AVC, MPEG-2, VC-1, WMV9, MPEG-4, DivX®, Xvid and AVS), enabling users to enjoy a mobile media experience with no frame drops or jitter, even under a heavy CPU load

* Is optimized for motherboard designs and is also available in the PCI Express® mini-card module format

The new card comes works with the mini PCI-E slot, but I guess you could remove it from that container and have the half mini size. Now if we didn't have to hack the bios to get this card working that would be super!  I would give it a shot, but my S10-3T is going pretty soon.

  2. So, am I understanding correctly that you can install the bcm70015 in the empty slot and you don't have to disassemble the computer or perform a case mod to get it in?

So all it requires is a BIOS hack? Any idea how to get a hold of the info to whitelist it?

  3. Yes can someone please upload a tutorial of how to hack the BIOS? for $50-80 covering up a netbook therefore Lenovo s10-3t's biggest flaw of a crappy video card would simply be AMAZING. Thanks in advance

  4. I'm not going to go into detail, but you need to figure out what the VID and PID values are (put the card in a laptop/netbook that doesn't have whitelist) Then grab those values and throw them into the BIOS by using a Hex Editor, you gotta remember to change values in the proper port. Save the file. Flash your Bios and you are done.

Easy right? well it's a bit more complicated than that. Check:

  5. Actually, it is sort of that easy... kind of.

As I commented on an unrelated post, Jesse, the method for implementing crystal HD is updated. A few pages after your original link to the lenovo forums, and the person found out that the whitelist is organized into groups, and you have to replace a TV Tuner ID with the Broadcom ID.

Scroll down until you see a wall of text here:

That was for the 0012 though, not the 0015, so you'll need the hardware ID for the 15.

I'll comment later, as I plan on purchasing and installing this, I haven't done it myself yet.

  6. Er... I should have said, since I was in a rush... Essentially though, this allows you to put the Crystal HD card in the slot where you normally put your TV Tuner or 3G card, instead of having to yank your wifi card and butcher plastic.

All in all, yay for easier implementation.

  8. Im not sure if this card is worth getting, because Ive been watching 720p moves lag free on my Lenovo S10-3t lag-free. All I did was stop programs from running on services.msc and switched to "adjust to performance" (right clicking computer on start, properties, advanced system settings, performance settings). Then switch back after finishing watching videos. I haven't tried 1080p videos though..

Hope this helps many for a quick solution.

  9. Read this article:
    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2010/02/18/how-to-play-hd-video-on-a-netbook/

I followed it and now I can play 720p or 1080p without a problem. I checked my CPU readings - a 720p video that once took 98% of the CPU while playing now takes 45% using CoreAVC codec in through MPC.

All software, and no messy hardware changes. Check it out.

  10. king, the problem isn't so much with playback but with flash sights like hulu.

Personally, I don't think $50-$80 is worth spending on just a hardware device to watch Hulu or Youtube HD videos. As another alternative, you can always download and save them to your hard-drive and play them smoothly with the CoreAVC codec, then delete them after watching them if desired .

    @ King

I <3 you man, thanks for the heads up. Wish I had known before...

Sorry, I should've paid closer attention to your previous posts. I guess Core won't help with flash.

    @ HD

I'm glad you found it helpful. This codec paired with MPC maid my S10-3T so worth twice the money I paid. It's already awesome in that I can use MMCE to view manga with ease. This is just an awesome machine. I'm just said Jesse had to let go of it.

  13. Logic Supply doed not respond to any queries or questions either their webmail or via Ebay. I tried 5 times, no response. And they force to use Google Checkout for outside US purchases, so prepare to be enslaved by Google for ever if you want to buy from this unresponsive seller of Broaccom Crystal HD cards named Logic Supply!

  14. That is correct. CoreAVC will definitely improve your ability to watch anything h.264. It's actually perfect for the netbook implementation, since it takes all sorts of shortcuts to reduce quality via decoding shortcuts so that it runs on lesser hardware.

And uh, will post when I get around to installing the card. Hopefully that's within a month.

  15. Instead of hacking the bios to include hardware that is not on a whitelist, why not just flash a modified version of the most current bios for the s10-3t with the whitelist check removed?

With this whitelist removed - you can install anything you want!
